Rising golf stars head to Guadeloupe

As soon as the 2018 Gösser Open in Austria ended on Saturday, rising golf stars of the Alps Tour packed their bags for a long trip, heading to the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe for the 8th edition of the Open de Saint-François Région Guadeloupe which starts on Thursday May 31st. 

111 players are scheduled to gather at the Golf International de Saint-François through June 2nd. 
 
Spain’s David Borda, leader of the Alps Tour’s Order of Merit, is participating in this year’s edition. The winner of last Saturday’s Gösser Open, Santiago Tarrio (ESP), did not have much time to celebrate and travelled to the French Caribbean as well. 
 
Defending champion Thomas Elissalde (FRA) and past winner Leo Lespinasse (FRA, 2016) are also playing this year in Guadeloupe.  
 
The €43,000 prize money tournament is played over 54 holes of traditional stroke. Following a cut after 36 holes, the top 40 and ties will qualify for the final title day of the tournament. 
 
The Golf International de Saint-François features a 18 holes, par 71 Golf Course with a total length of 5 990 meters. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr, a pioneer in golf course architecture.

Spain’s Tarrio wins Gösser Open

Spain’s Santiago Tarrio won the Gösser Open today at the GC Erzherzog Johann in Maria Lankowitz (Austria) with a total of -13.

It was Tarrio’s first win on the Alps Tour. The 2017 winner of the tournament Lukas Nemecz (AUT), Kevin Hesbois (BEL) and Louis Cohen Boyer (FRA) tied for 2nd place at -10.

«  I’m very tired but very happy, it’s my first victory on the Alps Tour after a second place last year » 27-year-old Tarrio said. «  I want to thank my sponsors, my family, my coach and all the people who are supporting me » he continued. «  I arrived at the Gösser Open after missing two cuts in a row on the Challenge Tour, so I did not have good feelings at first. But I love playing in this tournament as it feels like home here, it’s peaceful, it’s nice » he added. «  I’m not going to have time to think too much about this victory as I’m already preparing for the next Alps Tour tournament in Guadeloupe on Thursday » he concluded.
Yesterday, round 2 was stopped halfway through at the end of the afternoon after thunderstorms and rain showers made the course unplayable. Round 2 resumed this morning and 44 players made the cut and played the final round this afternoon.

« I’m happy, my week went pretty well. I did not know the course before and I struggled on the first day » Frenchman Louis Cohen Boyer who tied for 2nd place said. «  Yesterday, I did not know if I was going to make the cut. But this morning, I teed off very early, at 7.00 am, to complete the second round and then I started making birdies to make the cut » he continued. Cohen Boyer turned in the best card of the final round (-5) along with Lukas Nemecz (AUT) and Marcus Mohr (ENG).

«  I’m pretty happy about my game, I played well out there » Belgium’s Kevin Hesbois who also tied for 2nd place said. «  I made a few mistakes but I made 7 birdies and that made a difference in the end » Hesbois explained.
David Borda (ESP) still leads the Order of Merit, the Alps Tour official season ranking. He is followed by Jack Singh Brar (ENG) who did not travel to Austria this week and by today’s winner, Santiago Tarrio.
Today’s weather conditions were clear with afternoon clouds and temperatures in the mid 20s.

Rising golf stars of the Alps Tour are now heading to the French Caribbean Island of Guadeloupe for the Open de Saint François Region Guadeloupe, starting on May 31st.

Tarrio and amateur Regner co-leaders of Gösser Open

Round 2 of the Gösser Open was completed this morning and 44 players made the cut set at -2.

Yesterday, round 2 was stopped halfway through at the end of the afternoon after thunderstorms and rain showers made the course unplayable.
Santiago Tarrio (ESP) and amateur Niklas Regner (AUT) are co-leaders at -9. They’re followed by Jurgen Maurer (AUT), Markus Brier (AUT), Jordi Garcia Del Moral (ESP) and Teremoana Beaucousin (FRA) at -7.
«  My long game was very good, my putting was excellent » Austria’s Nikals Regner, who quit his skiing career after a national title in his age category to turn full-time to golfing, said after completing round 2. « I don’t mind playing two rounds in a day, it’s the same routine, I’m really forward to the final round » he added.
The Austrian delegation is bringing 12 players into the final round, including 3 amateurs.
Weather conditions have improved compared to the last couple of days. Sky is partly cloudy this afternoon and temperatures are in the mid-20s.
A shotgun start launched the final round of the Gösser Open at 12h40 local time.

Rain disrupts round 2 of Gösser Open

The second round of the Gösser Open was heavily disrupted today by thunderstorms and rain showers that ultimately led to the cancelation of the day’s play halfway through the round.
Play first resumed after a 2-hour interruption before organizers decided to call players back to the clubhouse for good less at 16h45 local time.
«  It’s been raining here almost non stop for two weeks » tournament director Estelle Richard explained. «  The course can no longer drain the water » she added. Some players at the clubhouse said parts of the course were unplayable.
«  Round 2 will resume tomorrow morning at 7h00 local time » Richard announced. «  We will make our best effort to complete the tournament with a final round with a shotgun start » she concluded.
Santiago Tarrio (ESP) is the current leader at the clubhouse at -9. He is followed by Jurgen Maurer (AUT) and round 1 leader Teremoana Beaucousin (FRA) who are both at -7 after completing round 2.
«  I played well today, I missed a few putts but it’s quiet normal because the greens are tough here » Tarrio said. « I feel a bit tired, I’ve been playing quite a lot in the past few weeks but I will get some rest tonight to give my best tomorrow » he said. « I feel like I’m home with this weather, I’m from Galicia where it rains a lot » he concluded.
The GC Erzherzog Johann in Maria Lankowitz (Austria) is hosting the 26th edition of the Gösser Open through tomorrow.

Beaucousin sole leader of Gösser Open

Round 1 of the Gösser Open saw Teremoana Beaucousin (FRA) take the lead of the tournament at -7, 2 shots ahead of a group of 5 players, at the GC Erzherzog Johann in Maria Lankowitz, Austria.
«  I started with 2 birdies on the first 2 holes, then I made par up to hole 7 where I made another birdie, I made a birdie on 12 and an eagle on 13 to finish with a final birdie on 16 » Beaucousin explained.
«  I feel good, I’ve been playing better in the last couple of months, I got some good practice in Morocco this winter and I’m ready » he added.
The 143 rising golf stars enrolled in the tournament faced difficult weather conditions with rain showers hitting the course throughout most of the day.
«  It was very rainy » Beaucousin said. «  The pins were not that easy and there was a lot of spin on the ball so it was kind of hard to keep the ball near the hole » he added.
Beaucousin, 23, is from Tahiti, French Polynesia. He arrived in mainland France 8 months ago after spending 4 years on a scholarship studying and playing golf at Kennesaw State near Atlanta, Georgia (USA). The Gösser Open is his second tournament of the Alps Tour.
This year marks the 26th edition of the Gösser Open, the oldest tournament on the Alps Tour circuit.
The Gösser Open continues tomorrow with round 2. First tee time is at 7h30 local time.

Gösser Open launches Alps Tour’s busy season

Rising golf stars of the Alps Tour head to Austria this week for the 26th edition of the Gösser Open, the oldest tournament on the Alps Tour circuit which was created in 2001.
 
144 players are scheduled to gather at the Golf Club Erzherzog Johann at the foot of the Stubalpe mountain in bucolic Maria Lakowitz May 24th through May 26th.
 
«  Players are always looking forward to participating in the Gösser Open tournament administrator Alessandro Pia said. “ The clubhouse is very cozy, it is very quite, we’re surrounded by mountains, everyone loves travelling there” Pia added.
 
«  It is a pleasant course to play. It seems simple to play but you can quickly get caught » Frenchman Alexandre Daydou said.  
 
The €42,500 prize money tournament is played over 54 holes of traditional stroke. Following a cut after 36 holes, the top 40 and ties will qualify for the final title day of the tournament. 
 
Spain’s David Borda, leader of the Alps Tour’s Order of Merit, is due to take part in this year’s edition. 
 
Defending champion Lukas Nemecz (Aut), past winners Thomas Elissalde (Fra, 2014) and Brendan Mc Carroll (Irl, 2012-2013) who received a wild-card from the promoter are also expected to play this year in Maria Lankowitz. 
Although Nemecz’s focus this season is on the European Challenge Tour, which is a step above the Alps Tour, the participation of the 28-year-old Graz resident in the tournament was never in question.
 
« My success in the tournament last year was the initial spark for a really good season » Nemecz said. « Of course, it would be awesome if I could win my home tournament again this year. It will not be easy, as the level on the Alps Tour gets better year after year. But I’m in good shape and I’m confident » said Nemecz, who recently tied for 14th place at the Challenge Tour event in Portugal.
 
The Gösser Open is launching a busy period for Alps Tour players with almost a tournament every week until the end of July.
The 26-year sponsorship engagement of Austrian brewery Gösser in the tournament is unique in the Austrian sports scene. « Like the Gösser brand, the Gösser Open stands for great tradition and top quality » Gösser Sales Director Ronald Zentner said. 
 
The Golf Club Erzherzog Johann features a 18 holes, par 72 Championship Golf Course with a total length of 5 967 meters.
