Gold for Victorious Van Meijel at the Open de la Mirabelle d’Or

Metz (France), June 23rd, 2019 – Top of the board over the three days, Lars Van Meijel maintained a steady hand to win the Open de la Mirabelle d’Or 2019 by 4 strokes.

Van Meijel admitted to having struggled to find his rhythm going out as the windy conditions today made play more challenging than yesterday. He put the bogey on hole 2 down to this rather than nerves as he had a good drive but missed the approach shot: Van Meijel “I had a short pitching wedge  shot and I got the wind maybe slightly wrong so I went just over and had a tricky lie”. He rapidly mastered the weather conditions as he finished the front nine with 2 birdies and five pars for a -1 (34).

His confidence was reinforced on the back nine as he birdied the first 4 holes followed by 4 straight pars.  The wind again played a role in the only glitch coming in as he finished short of the green on the par 4 hole 18 and saw his first putt just slide past the hole for bogey. But victory was in the bag along with the 6,235 € prize money.

Lars adds this 2019 trophy to the one he won at the Red Sea Little Venice Open in 2017. His win sees him move up 10 places on the Order of Merit to number 5.

In second place, 24-year-old Frenchman Nicolas Platret improved yet again on yesterday’s result with an excellent round of -6 (65) which included 7 birdies that more than compensated for the sole bogey on hole 1. His overall -14 (199) for the tournament gives him his first top ten finish of this, his rookie season.

Completing the podium at joint third were Frenchman Franck Medale and Austrian Timon Baltl at -12 (201) for the 54 holes.

Medale had started the round two points behind the leader and opened with a solid front nine to narrow the gap to one stroke between him and Van Meijel on the front nine. But two bogeys on the back nine saw his advantage eaten away and he finished with a -2 (69) for the day.

Whilst Timon Baltl, recent runner-up at the Acaya Open and winner of the 2019 Gosser Open, showed his fighting spirit again, carding a -5 (66). He started with a somewhat eclectic front nine: two bogeys, four pars, a birdie and an eagle. But settled down on the back nine to give him his third top ten finish of the season and keep him at fourth on the Order of Merit.

Next stop for the Alps Tour is the 2019 Saint-Malo Golf Mixed Open with LET Access Series in Brittany, France, from 4th-7th July 2019. This first in European professional golf will see 72 male players from the Alps Tour and 72 female players from the Ladies European Tour Access Series competing for the same trophy and the same 45,000€ prize money.

Mirabelle d’Or, Van Meijel continues his solid performance to take the lead on Day 2

Metz (France), June 22nd, 2019 – With a repeat of the previous day’s -7(64) to finish at -14 for the two days, the Dutch player Lars Van Meijel takes a four-point lead going into the final day of the Open de Mirabelle d’Or in Metz, France.

There was no faltering today as Van Meijel carded 7 birdies and 11 pars for another 64 over the 18 holes. He had credited his result yesterday to his strong driving and today was a repeat performance with him missing only one fairway. Having made all the greens in regulation he demonstrated a keen eye on the greens as well. Van Meijel said “I was happy with my putting today as well. I putted well”. His impression was that from tee to green he had played even better than the day before.

Yesterday’s joint leader, French player Franck Medale had teed off in the morning and was the morning leader coming off the 18th with a -3 (68) for the day to give him a -10 overall. However, the tight pin positions today posed some problems for him: Medale “The flags were a little bit more in the corners and I made a few club choice errors approaching the green which cost me a few bogeys.” Overall, he left the course confident that his second place -10 leaves him in a good position for the final round where he aims to “be patient, play it hole by hole and wait for the birdies to fall.”

Right behind Medale was the Italian Michele Ortolani, who soared up the leader board today moving from joint 19th to third place with a great round of -7 (64) including 8 birdies to leave him at -9 for the 36 holes. An experienced Alps Tour player, Ortolani has had three top ten finishes but has yet to taste victory.

And hard on his heels are the two French rookies Pierre Pineau and Nicolas Platret both on -8 for overall joint fourth place. Pineau continued to play consistently with a -4 (67) as he did yesterday whilst Platret improved his result today by two strokes, carding a -5 (66).

The three players in joint 6th place, coming in at -7, are Frenchman Teremoana Beaucousin and Austrian Markus Habeler who both played -4 (67) today. They’re joined by Habeler’s compatriot Timon Baltl who carded an impressive -6 (65) for the day.

The cut was at -2 (140) for the 36 holes so 42 professionals and 2 amateurs will head out for what looks like being a closely contended final day of the Open de la Mirabelle d’Or.

Open de la Mirabelle d’Or, Van Meijel and Medale lead the field at the end of 1st Round

Metz (France), June 21st 2019 – The Dutch player Lars Van Meijel and the French player Franck Medale both carded a -7 (64) for the first round of the Open de Mirabelle d’Or to be on top of the leader board of the 136 players competing in Metz, France.

Meijel teed off in the morning and moved into the lead with 3 birdies and an eagle on the front nine. He continued his solid performance on the back nine with another birdie and an eagle. He put his strong showing down to his driver above all: Meijel ”I hit my driver straight and long to give me short iron shots on the approaches to the par fives”. Indeed, his tally for the three par 5s on the course was birdie, par, eagle.

But as Meijel was nearing the end of his round, Medale teed off in the early afternoon and gradually ate away the Dutchman’s advantage. Medale’s approach was to concentrate on constructing his game with good tee shots: Medale “My objective was to start each hole well to allow me to be aggressive but constructive and create birdie opportunities.” An approach that worked as with seven birdies, three of which were also on the par fives, he turned in mirror nines with a 32 both out and in.

Van Meijel, 25, is an experienced Alps Tour player having had one victory in the 2017 Red Sea Little Venice Open and 9 top ten finishes, and having played one season (2018) on the Challenge Tour. Franck, 23, is still hoping for his first illusive victory on his second year as a professional.

Both players were happy about the condition of the course, Golf Club de la Grange-aux-Ormes, although the rough proved to be quite tough making spin control difficult.

Just behind the leaders at -6 (65) is the rookie Englishman Ben Amor, 22, closely followed by Irishman Simon Bryan, 28, at -5 (66).

With 5 players at -4 (67), 9 players at -3 (68), 12 players at -2 (69) and 24 players at -1 (70), the 2nd Round should prove to be interesting.

Play resumes tomorrow at 7:45 am with the leaders’ tee-times reversed. An early start for Medale and an afternoon tee-off for Meijel.

Next Stop France for the Open de la Mirabelle d’Or

This will be the 16th edition of the Open de la Mirabelle d’Or to be held at the Philippe Gourdon designed course of Golf de La Grange aux Ormes just outside Metz in the Lorraine region of France.

Last year’s winner, the Spaniard Santiago Tarrio, who now plays on the Challenge Tour won’t be defending his title so the trophy will be looking for a new home!

With over 70 French players confirmed there will be a strong home turf contingent vying for it in the field of 144 players teeing off on Thursday. Among them previous tournament winners Maxime Radureau who won in 2017 and Xavier Poncelet who triumphed in 2012. Also, rookie Frédéric Lacroix, number 3 on the Order of Merit, will be looking to add another victory to his season after winning the Ein Bay Open and the Alps de Las Castillas.

Austrian Timon Baltl will be hoping to compensate for his recent disappointment at losing the hard-fought final round at the Acaya Open Dailies 1 in Italy.

The Golf de la Grange aux Ormes always ensures a great welcome for the players but it also caters for the spectators. Access is free for the public and over the course of the tournament they can enjoy various entertaining and fun activities including the Cut Party on Saturday evening. And of course, they will see some great golf!

The Pro-Am takes place on Thursday 20th June and then the competition proper starts on Friday with a stroke play format over 3 days for the 43,000€ prize money.

Italian Gregory Molteni wins the Acaya Open Dailies Total 1 to claim his first Alps Tour career victory

June 15th 2019 – In a closely fought final round, Italian Gregory Molteni was at the top of an international podium for the first time in his 16 years career as a pro with a final score of -11 for the three days to take home the €5,800 prize money.

He started the day one stroke ahead at -7 of his playing partner, Austrian Timon Baltl at -6. Both Molteni and Baltl played a steady first 6 holes, each birdying the first and then serial pars until the 7th where Molteni’s one stroke advantage disappeared when Baltl birdied the hole.

Neck and neck coming into the 8th the pressure increased as Molteni made par but Baltl carded another birdie to draw one stroke ahead.

Unfortunately, Baltl’s hooked his tee shot on the par 5 ninth into the high rough on the left of the fairway. The ball was declared lost but Baltl still managed bogey with his second ball. However, Molteni carded a birdie to take back the lead as they started the back nine.

Par on the 10th for both players then Molteni faltered on the 11th with a double bogey for Baltl’s par which saw his lead evaporate and put Baltl in the lead again by one stroke.

Molteni response was immediate with a birdie on the par four 12th to put the players all square again. The Italian sun seemed to be shining on him as he birdied the par three 13th versus Baltl’s bogey. Molteni was back in command with a two-stroke lead heading into the final five holes.

Molteni preserved his two-stroke lead as both players parred the 14th and 15th. With just three holes to go,Timon Baltl had not had his last word as he continued to fight back hard and birdied the 16th whilst Molteni made par. The two-stroke lead was now down to one with just two holes to go.

Both players demonstrated nerves of steel at the 17th with a birdie for each. The final hole was now the decisive one.

Hole 18, par four, just one stroke difference and everything to play for. Could Timon force a play-off? Here he talks us through the final hole:

Timon:” “I hit a great tee shot on 18 which is very, very difficult and Gregory missed his one into the water. I made a bad second shot, missed the green, maybe I was little bit too aggressive going for the flag. Quite a good chip then just missed from 1.5 metres to force a play-off. Of course, at the moment I’m very disappointed but anyway happy with the game this week.”

So, Gregory Molteni came through victorious to raise his first professional trophy in an international tournament. Molteni: “I’ve been close many times but never won…I want to dedicate this win to my father Pietro, today it’s his birthday. I have wanted to dedicate something to him for a long time and now I have this opportunity”.

Besides playing on the Alps Tour, Molteni has also played on both the European Tour and Challenge Tours with some good rounds, but no victories. However, he has not been a regular tournament player in recent months having turned his focus to teaching. Molteni: “Maybe my change of focus to teaching has allowed me to put less pressure on myself, to be less obsessed about performance and perfection”.

He did not neglect to pay tribute to his playing partner, Timon Baltl: “Timon was a hard contender. He never gave up during the whole round. On the 18th, I thought we would go to play-off”. Indeed, Baltl’s result today moves him up to fourth on the Order of Merit in this, his second year on the Alps Tour.

Third place went to the Argentinian Maximiliano Godoy (-8). Englishman James Sharp shared joint fourth (-7) with Italian Edoardo Lipparelli. Lipparelli’s result now raises him to the top of the Order of Merit.

A stellar performance puts Molteni in the lead at the end of Round 2 of Acaya Open

June 14th 2019 – The 37 year-old Italian, Gregory Molteni, is at -9 having carded a -7 (64) to move 9 places to the top of the leader board on day 2 of the Acaya Open.

Climatic conditions continued to challenge the players with strong winds and high temperatures, but neither they nor the difficulty of the course got in the way of Molteni. His score card showed par after par interrupted only by 2 eagles and 3 birdies for him to storm into the lead.

Molteni was absolutely delighted about his performance: “I can say it is one of the best rounds of my career, actually probably the best, considering these windy conditions on such a difficult course. I was happy yesterday with my 2 under, but today was really special, the wind was blowing in the opposite direction, from the North, which is considered more difficult. My best shot of the day? I think the second one on the 18th, it was particularly difficult, a 5 iron with lots of wind from left to right, and I hit it 1.5 metres from the hole and then I made the putt. I had other nice shots, but I will remember this one for a long time”.

Molteni started his professional career on the Alps Tour in 2006 collecting 7 top-threes (never a win, though) and is no longer a full-time tour player, having played in only two other Alps Tour tournament this season, Abruzzo Open in April and Memorial Giorgio Bordoni in May, but the motivation is still there as he explains: « I still enjoy playing tournaments from time to time and being in the mix. Of course, I’m getting older and the new generation is very strong, but I can still be in contention”.

He also gave some insight into his course management at the Acaya Golf Club: “This is not a course where you can be very aggressive, you need to stay patient, the course is hard and even more so with the wind. So maybe this could be my advantage against young players! ».

Maybe, but hot on his heels in second place is Austrian Timon Baltl, 24, winner of the 2019 Gosser Open in May, who carded a -6 (65) to take him to -8 overall. Whilst in third place, Englishman James Sharp’s consistent play of -3 (68) which added to his first round of -4 (67) leaves him very much in contention at -7.

Yesterday’s leader, Pierre Verlaar of the Netherlands is now in joint fourth place with the Italian Edoardo Lipparelli, the recent winner of the Open de Saint Francois in Guadeloupe, both at -6 overall. They’re closely followed at -5 for the two days by the Argentinian Maximiliano Godoy and the Italian Federico Zucchetti.

46 players (43 professionals and 3 amateurs) made the cut at +4 (146).

We can look forward to a closely contested match for the final tomorrow with the weather continuing to be hot and windy at the Acaya Golf Club in Lecce, Italy.

Acaya Open, Pierre Verlaar tops the board at the end of the 1st round

June 13th 2019 – At the end of a scorching day one of the Acaya Open Dailies Total 1 the Dutch rookie Pierre Verlaar is in the lead with a -6 (65), two strokes ahead on the leaderboard.

Verlaar teed off on the first for a promising start: “So 1 was a birdie there and all round the game was good. I hit lots of fairways. Only on three holes I didn’t get a birdie chance. There was lots of birdie chances there and I made quite a lot of them, I made six of them. I missed a couple of short ones as well. But it was a good game today”.

Weather conditions complicated matters as Verlaar underlined “With this wind blowing you really have to get focussed at times”. In addition, the temperatures rose to a high of 33°C during the afternoon with similar conditions expected tomorrow.

Verlaar’s performance is especially satisfying as he is coming back from being injured and as he said, has needed to “rest and then fill the battery up again and play again”. After his excellent round at the Abruzzo Open in April, today’s performance is more than encouraging.

In second place, the experienced English player, James Sharp who will be looking to repeat his 2017 Cervino Open win, had four birdies on the back nine to put him two strokes behind Verlaar -4 (67).

Filling the third slot is a group of 7 players all at -3 (68). The Italians are there in force with four players in the third-place pack including Lorenzo Scalise, the winner of the New Giza Open in March of this year and currently fourth on the Order of Merit. He’s accompanied by two other compatriots Federico Zucchetti and Stefano Pitoni along with experienced player Guglielmo Bravetti.

But Order of Merit leader and hat-trick hunting Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez is also present and finished in style with an eagle 2 on the par 4 ninth. He’s accompanied by another Spanish rookie, Angel Hidalgo Portillo. The Argentinian Maximiliano Godoy, who eagled the par 4 third, completes the tally.

The players at the Acaya Golf Club have enthused about the quality of the course, rating it among the best since the start of the 2019 season. With today’s results it should be the stage for an interesting round 2 tomorrow.

Welcome Back To Puglia Alps Tour!

The Alps Tour is delighted to return to Lecce, the ‘Florence of the South’ and play at the Acaya Golf Club situated in a location of breath-taking natural beauty. Considered one of the most exclusive and fascinating golf courses of Southern Italy, Acaya Golf Club last hosted the Alps Tour in September 2010.

There looks to be a strong field contending for the trophy with Edoardo Lipparelli, fresh from his victory at the Open de Saint François in Guadeloupe, leading the charge. His ambitions for a home-turf win in Italy will be seriously challenged though by fellow Italian, Giulio Castagnara, runner-up in Guadeloupe and the third placed Argentinian, Leandro Marelli.

Also present will be current Order of Merit number 1, Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez. Two-time winner on the Tour this season at the Abruzzo Open Dailies Total 1 in April and Memorial Giorgio Bordoni in May, the Spanish player will be hoping that Italy will smile on him again to give him a hat-trick heading into the final tournaments of the tour.

However, he’s not the only player with ambitions for a hat-trick this season. Fréderic Lacroix, the French rookie who opened the 2019 season with a win at the Ein Bay Open and then consolidated his great form with a win at the Alps de Las Castillas will be ready to do battle. His fourth place in Guadeloupe demonstrated that he’s on form.

But the rookies can also expect that the experienced players are going to be there in force too. Xavier Poncelet who finished tied fourth in Guadeloupe will be flying the French flag whilst Englishman Benjamin Wheeler will be more than eager to savour a repeat of his win at the Red Sea Little Venice Open in February.

The tournament schedule starts with the Pro-Am Tournament on Wednesday 12th June with a shot gun start at 11h30, then the two qualifying rounds on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th with the final round on Saturday 15th June for the 40,000€ prize fund.

Acaya Open Dailies Total 1 is promoted by Italianprotour, branch of the Italian Golf Federation, with the support of Dailies Total 1 as title sponsor and Puglia Outlet as official sponsor, while Italianprotour can count on Banca Generali Private as title sponsor, BMW as main sponsor, Kappa and Leaseplan as official suppliers, and Infront as official advisor.

Italian rookie Lipparelli claims first title at Open de Saint-François-Région Guadeloupe

June 8th, 2019 – Saint-François (FWI) – It didn’t take long to Italian rookie Edoardo Lipparelli until he could claim his first title on the Alps Tour: on his 10th tournament, and after finishing three times in 2nd place, Lipparelli held back his nerves and could finally grab the 6,235 Euros cheque as 1st prize for the 9th Open de Saint-François – Région Guadeloupe, after co-leading the two previous rounds on beautiful Golf International de Saint-François, on the Eastern point of Guadeloupe island, in the French West Indies.

Lipparelli, 22, never left the top of the leaderboard and with solid and consistent rounds in 66-68-67 (201, -12), ended the tournament with a 2-strokes advantage over compatriot Giulio Castagnara, 24, also in his rookie season as a pro, author of the best round of the tournament with a final 65 (-6) that made him climb from 10th to 2nd place. “I’ve been playing good for a while now, and the win finally arrived! I am very very happy and obviously satisfied of getting my first win after three second places”, said Lipparelli, who had a strong amateur career with the Italian team before turning pro in 2017, and won the French Qualifying School last March. “Today it was a tough match out there, with a lot of wind the course was playing difficult; there was a bit of pressure towards the end because many players were doing well, especially Giulio (Castagnara) with 10 under; I was 11 under with four holes to play and I knew I had to finish strong. I tried to stay focussed on my game and actually I did, I made a couple of bad shots but I recovered well with the short game, I made no bogeys today. I’m so happy I’ve made it through! It was a fantastic week here in Guadeloupe, this place is amazing and I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Castagnara is also playing his first season on the Alps Tour, and has finished now five tournaments in-money out of the nine he played, cashing his biggest cheque – 4,235 Euros out of a total prize money of 43,000 Euros: “I started the day at -4, four strokes off the lead, and I thought that -10 or -11 could be good enough to win the tournament. It was a bit windy in the morning but I’ve started well, I made three birdies in the first six holes, then I went on playing well with two more birdies on 10th and 13th, I was close on 14th but I did not make the putt; at that point I was -9, I hadn’t looked at the leaderboard yet but I thought I was close to the leaders. My goal was going as low as -11, but unfortunately I’ve three-putted the 15th; I could recover well with two final birdies – at the 18th I even holed the chip shot! – so in all, it was a good day and I’m very happy of my second place and for Edoardo’s win, it is much deserved after the good results he had before. I’m very much loking forward next week in Italy!”.

Argentinian Leandro Marelli, 28, co-leader after the second round, could only add a final 70 (-1) to finish solo in 3rd place: “It was not a good day on the greens for me, I was not able to save pars in four holes, so three birdies and one eagle were not enough to challenge Edoardo, he played very well and he deserves this win very much”.

Promoted by TV Sport Events, the 9th edition of Open de Saint-François – Région Guadeloupe could count on a pool of sponsors : Région Guadeloupe, Riviera du Levant, Commune de Saint-François, Caisse d’Epargne CEPAC, Corsair, Conseil Départemental de la Guadeloupe, Monetik Alizés, Arcelor Mittal, Comité du Tourisme des Iles de Guadeloupe, Jaguar Land Rover, Golf International de Saint-François, Mont Blanc, Capès, Xeria, Lynx Optique, CANAL+, Damoiseau, Oasis, Heineken, 20 sur 20 by Damoiseau, Nespresso, Dubois Imagerie, Samsag, Villa Jasmin and Villa la Coulée Bleue.

Lipparelli and Marelli on top after 2nd round in Guadeloupe

June 7th, 2019 – Saint-François (FWI) – The second round of the 9th Open de Saint-François – Région Guadeloupe is over, and the stage has changed a bit except for one name, Edoardo Lipparelli, who’s still keeping the top position having added a 68 to yesterday’s 66 ; at -8, the Italian is sharing now the lead with Argentinian Leandro Marelli, author of the best round of the day, 66 (-5).

The duo has just one stroke advantage over another Argentinian, experienced Rafa Echenique ; with two consistent rounds (68-67), the man from San Luis is standing solo on 3rd position at -7, and three more players share the 4th position at -6 : Frenchmen Maxime Radureau (who was 2nd last year in this tournament) and Xavier Poncelet, plus English amateur Jack Floydd, yesterday’s co-leader.

Rookie Lipparelli, 22, is confirming his great, consistent form (he’s 2nd in the season Order of Merit after having collected 3 second places in the first 9 tournaments of the year) and is in good position to finally claim his first, full title as a pro, after winning the French Qualifying School in March : « I’m very happy about the way I’ve played today, although I did not make as many putts as I wished ; the course was a bit more difficult as the wind picked up and the ground is getting drier, but it was a solid round. Tomorrow’s final round is certainly going to be challenging and I will need to be very careful ; I want to be focussed just as I was today, thinking shot by shot, and I’m sure it’s going to be fun ».

Marelli, 28, a regular on the Pga LatinoAmerica, is playing his 4th Alps Tour tournament, looking to climb the Order of Merit and get one of the spots available for the promotion to the European Challenge Tour : « I had the chance to finish well my round with three birdies on the last three holes (after 4 more birdies and 2 bogeys) ; lately I have been playing very solid and I feel I can play another good round tomorrow in order to finish high on the leaderboard, this is my main goal. I love playing the Alps Tour ! ».

Echenique, 38, is also a member of the Pga LatinoAmerica and is coming back to the Alps Tour after the first two tournaments of the year in Egypt (where he had a 4th place in the Red Sea Little Venice Open, last February), having had to stop for some weeks because of a back injury. « I’ve played very well both days, I was able to stay very patient and I feel I’m on the good track for a new chapter of my career in Europe ; now I just want to have a good round tomorrow ! ».

46 players (43 pros and 3 ams) made the cut at +3 (145) on beautiful Golf International de Saint-François, on the Eastern point of Guadeloupe island, in the French West Indies. The total prize money is 43,000 Euros, and the winner will get a cheque of 6,235 Euros.

Promoted by TV Sport Events, the 9th edition of Open de Saint-François – Région Guadeloupe can count on official partners as La Région Guadeloupe, La Riviera du Levant, La Caisse d’Epargne CEPAC Antilles, Land Rover, Corsair, Le Comité du Tourisme des Iles de Guadeloupe, Monetik Alizés, Arcelor Mittal.
