Agrate Conturbia, September 30th 2022- Ben Schmidt wins with an unbelievable birdie-birdie finish his 1st professional event at the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open with a score of 15 under-par. Vince Van Veen, winner at the 2022 Fred Olsen Alps de La Gomera concluded the tournament just one stroke back 14 under-par. In third place, another of this season previous winner Ireland’s Gary Hurley at 13 under-par. There was a 3-way tie for 4th place at 12 under-par with: Sam Robinson, Tom Vaillant (am) and Edoardo R Lipparelli.
The final round tee times of the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open were delayed 1 hour due to heavy overnight rain that caused unplayable greens. Thanks to the unbelievable work performed by the Golf Club Castelconturbia superintendents the final round began at 9:00am with the overnight leaders teeing off at 10:20am. Players competing in today’s final round had to face a cold and rainy day with softer course conditions compared to the last few days.
Final Round Player Quotes-
Ben Schmidt won his first professional event here at the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open by just one stroke. He concluded the tournament at 15 under-par with a 5 under-par final round. During today’s final round, Ben made 6 birdies and 1 bogey. After he finished his round, his first reactions were, “My game was very good today, it’s been very solid all week. I made a small mistake on 16 with a bogey today but it was a nice finish with 2 good birdies on 17 and 18. So I was very happy with that. He also added that: “I’ve enjoyed this course, it’s a thinkers course, you have to put it in play off the tee and if you don’t then it will be hard to hit good shots into the greens. The greens are tricky but very rewarding at the same time. I’ve really enjoyed playing this course.” With this being his first professional win, he added: “this is my first professional win so I would like to try and take everything that I’ve learned from this week into my next events.”
Vince Van Veen from Netherlands, shot a final round of 7 under-par for a three-day total of 14 under-par to conclude his tournament in 2nd place just one stroke from the lead. After he concluded his final round under some difficult conditions, Vince was very pleased: “I’ve worked really hard on my putting and this week more pieces were coming together and it’s exactly what I wanted heading into the final next week. I was playing very well. I made a few mistakes but was able to recover and made pars. Making 7 birdies with no bogeys is always good before the finals.” He now has a few days off before the finals next week and Vince plans on “resting a lot the next few days before the finals.” When asked what his plan is for the finals, Vince commented: “Next week I want to maintain focus on the process goals that is what makes me perform well and stay present day by day.”
The Alps Tour Order of Merit rank heading into next week’s 2022 Emilia Romagna Alps Tour Grand Final has Italy’s Gregorio De Leo leading and France’s Tom Vaillant (am) and Julien Sale to close out the top three spots. In 4th place, Ireland’s Gary Hurley and in 5th place Netherland’s Vince Van Veen.

Ben Schmidt winner of the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open, earned 6,525 Order of Merit points and the winning check of €5,800.
Next week the top 50 players in the official Order of Merit rank, will compete at the 2022 Emilia Romagna Alps Tour Grand Final which will be played at Modena Golf & Country Club from October 6th– October 8th. The tournament prize fund is set at € 50,000 and 5 Challenge Tour cards will be given out to the top 5 players in the order of merit at the conclusion of the event.

Agrate Conturbia, September 29th 2022- Italy’s Andrea Saracino and Spain’s Mario Galiano Aguilar are in a two-way tie for the lead at 11 under-par entering the final round of the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open. They hold a one stroke lead over England’s Ben Schmidt and Austria’s Alexander Kopp that are in a tie for 3rd place at 10 under-par. There is a 5-way tie for 5th place at 9 under-par that includes two winners of this season: Portugal’s Tomas Guimaraes Bessa and France’s Tom Vaillant (am).
Another typical fall day with overcast skies, chilly temperatures and some light rains towards the end of the day at Golf Club Castelconturbia for the second round of the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open. It was another day with opportunities for good scoring conditions for the players to take advantage ahead of tomorrow’s final round. They are eagerly trying to capture important order of merit points and move up as much as possible in the rankings ahead of next week’s 2022 Emilia Romagna Alps Tour Grand Final. Play began again at 8:00 am this morning from both the 1st and 10th hole. The expected forecast for tomorrow’s final round remains similar, however there will be a chance of rain.
Round 2 Player Quotes-
Italy’s Andrea Saracino who was in a tie for 4th place at the conclusion of yesterday’s 1st round, finds himself in a tie for the lead after today’s round. He followed his opening-round of 6 under-par, with a 5 under-par in the second round for a two-day total of 11 under-par. He turned professional in 2017 and hopes to make a final move in the Alps Tour Order of Merit to try and regain his Challenge Tour card at next week’s event. He has been playing very consistent throughout the season and hopes to breakthrough with a win before the season ends. When Andrea concluded his round, he was very pleased on how he played today: “My long game was very good today, I hit a lot of good shots into the greens for birdies. I putted very well on the front nine holes and then it was steady on the back nine. I’m overall extremely pleased about today’s round and who knows what will happen tomorrow.” He also commented on how “my long game has been solid all season, my putting is what I struggled with the most but the last couple of events it seems like it’s finally coming around.” Andrea went on to add that he wants to “remain focused on these next two events of the season and see what happens before making any plans for the future.”
Spain’s Mario Galiano Aguilar followed his opening round of 5 under-par 67 with a 6 under-par 66 for a two-day total of 11 under-par, which allows him to be in a tie for the lead entering tomorrow’s final round. He made 1 eagle and 3 birdies on the front nine holes and 2 birdies and a single bogey on the back nine. Mario commented after his round that his: “iron play has been very good this week. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about my driving but when I do put the ball in play, I’ve been making a lot of birdies. My putter has been working well good also.” On how he will approach tomorrow, he plans on “trying to do the same tomorrow. Put the ball in the fairways as much as possible and I know I can have a chance to win. Tomorrow will definitely be a day where I can learn a lot and I’m excited to see what will happen.”
England’s Ben Schmidt shot an incredible bogey-free 8 under-par round today for a two-day total of 10 under-par and be in a tie for 3rd place only 1 stroke off the lead entering tomorrow’s final round. He made 6 birdies on the front nine and 2 birdies on the back. When Ben signed for his 8under-par, he was very satisfied: “today was a great day, I played really solidly all around, played very similar to yesterday just today I holed a few more putts. I holed a few long putts and made some clutch savers. When I missed the green, I got up and down. I had the same game plan and yesterday felt it was good so just stuck to that and I will be doing the same for tomorrow.” He found that the course was “playing very similar to yesterday, greens fairly soft which means could fire at the pins and the ball was stopping.” Ben also told said he feels like he’s been hitting his driver very well over the past 2 days which is important on this course, “on this course if you are straight off the tee then you will always have a chance because the course isn’t so long but if you don’t put it in play then you can struggle.”
Alexander Kopp from Austria is tied for 3rd place alongside Ben Schmidt at 10 under-par and only 1 stroke off the lead. He shot a second round of 5 under-par 67 with 8 birdies and 3 bogeys. At the conclusion of Alexander’s round, he was very happy with his first two round here at the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open. “I unfortunately hit some bad drives off the tee today but my short game was very solid. Tomorrow I want to go out there enjoy the round and the wonderful course we are playing on this week.”
The 5-way tie for 5th place at 9 under-par only 2 strokes from the lead includes: Daniel Hebenstreit, Edoardo R Lipparelli, Daniel Gurtner, Tomas Guimaraes Bessa and Tom Vaillant (am).
Edoardo Giletta from Italy made a hole-in-one on the par 3 4th hole during today’s second round. Tom Vaillant(am) shot the low round of the day with a 9 under-par 63 today.
Final Round-
The final round of the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open, will begin at 8:00 am from the 1st and 10th hole.
A total of 49 players made the cut which was set 1 under-par (143). The leaders will tee off at 9.20 am from the 1st hole. The winner of the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open, will earn the winning check of €5,800 and valuable 6,525 Order of Merit points.

A typical fall day with overcast skies, a slight breeze and chilly temperatures in Northwestern Italy, welcomed players for the first round of the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open played at Golf Club Castelconturbia in Agrate Conturbia, Italy. This week is the last event of the regular Alps Tour season where players are trying to capture the final points in order to make a move in the rankings ahead of next week’s 2022 Emilia Romagna Alps Tour Grand Final. Play began at 8:00 am this morning from both the 1st and 10th hole. The forecast will remain chilly for the remainder of the week and some rain is expected for Friday’s final round.
Round 1 Player Quotes-
Three-time winner and order of merit leader Italy’s Gregorio De Leo has a two strokes lead at the conclusion of the 1stround at the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open. He shot an amazing bogey-free, 9 under-par 63 round today. He shot 5 birdies on the front nine hole and 4 birdies on the back nine. Gregorio who has already won the 2022 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni, 2022 Alps de Las Castillas and the most recent Alps Tour event, the 2022 Roma Alps Open was very satisfied with today’s round. “Today was very good, today my putting helped me tremendously which actually it’s what I struggled with the most lately. Today I holed a lot of putts and a few very long putts. I didn’t take a lot of risks today and had a good strategy which helped me put together today’s round.” He’s already secured his Challenge Tour card for next season, but he wanted “to compete this week to gain some confidence back. The last few tournaments I slightly lost it so I wanted to come back and compete on a course I’m familiar with the regain some confidence. Even though I have already three trophies this season, of course the ultimate goal would be to win another event.”
France’s Augustin Hole who represents Biarritz le Phare and turned professional at the end of the 2019 season, is one of the two players tied at 7 under-par at the end of the 1st round. He shot an incredible bogey-free round with 3 birdies on the front nine and 4 birdies on the back nine. After his bogey-free round, Augustin commented on how: “the pins were interesting on the par 3 today, smart golf was required to be on the right side. It is a great course, you don’t need to hit it very far of the tee, but you need to hit it in the good area of the course to make birdies, and if not, bogeys can come very easily.” He was “very pleased with this bogey-free round, I was able to hit the correct side of the course and had very very good putting.”
Austria’s Daniel Hebenstreit who represents Golf & Country Club Brunn is the other player in the two-way tie for 2ndplace at 7 under-par. He turned professional in January 2020 and has played on the Alps Tour since. In today’s round, he shot 8 birdies and 1 sole bogey. Daniel was pleased about his round today especially his putting: “The course was playing were nicely, there were some tough pins out there today that’s for sure. The greens are very tricky, very sloppy. My game off the tee and into the greens was very solid today. I holed a lot of putts today which was good.”
Daniel Gurtner from Switzerland who turned professional in 2021 and represents the Swiss PGA as well as Kyburg Golf Club, sits in a two-way tie for 4th after today’s first round. He shot a 6 under-par round 66 with 8 birdies and 2 bogeys. After his round Daniel commented on how he found the conditions ideal during today’s round: “The weather was ideal for golf, it was accessible in terms of weather. There was not much wind and the temperature was pleasant.” He also mentioned on how he found some of the pins were tricky but had the best putting round of the season: “Some of the pins today were tricky as some of the greens are very sloppy which made it harder. I tried to give myself the easiest putts possible and I was able to achieve that as I had my best putting round of the season. It was very rewarding.” Daniel went on to comment how he’s really enjoying the course: “It’s the first time the Alps Tour competes here, I really like this course, I like the conditions of the course, I like the greens even though they are tricky as they reward good putting. I hope we will be back here to compete next year.”
Tied for 4th place alongside Daniel Gurtner at 6 under-par and 3 shots back of the lead, there is Italy’s Andrea Saracino. There is a 6-way tie for 6th place at 5 under-par which includes: Spain’s Mario Galiano Aguilar, Austria’s Alexander Kopp, Portugal’s Tomas Guimaraes Bessa, Italy’s Edoardo Lipparelli, Ireland’s Gary Hurley and France’s Xavier Poncelet.
Julien Sale is competing in his first event as a professional player. He is currently 2nd in the Alps Tour Order of Merit and one of the players that is contenting to earn a Challenge Tour card for next season.
The 120 players in the field this week are competing for an overall prize fund of €40.000 and 45,000 Order of Merit points.

The second round of the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open will begin again at 8:00 am from the 1st and 10th hole. After round 2, a cut will be made.

A crucial week for the players competing at the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open.
Agrate Conturbia, September 26th 2022– After the summer break, the players are facing a decisive week as they are competing in the last tournament of the regular season before next week’s season ending 2022 Emilia Romagna Alps Tour Grand Final. This will be a very important week for the players who are trying to capture the final decisive points that are on the line and make a final move in the Order of Merit rank. This would allow them to access next week’s event where 2023 Challenge Tour cards will be awarded.
The 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open will be played at Golf Club Castelconturbia in Agrate Conturbia, Italy from September 28th until September 30th. On Tuesday September 27th, the traditional best ball aggregate to par pro-am will take place with approximately 25 teams.
The Field-
A very strong field of players will be competing this week at the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open. All of the current top 10 players in the Alps Tour Order of Merit rank will be present. This includes current leader and three-times winner this season: Italy’s Gregorio De Leo and two-times winner and currently 3rd in the rank: French amateur Tom Vaillant. Alongside the current top 10 players in the rank, the majority of this season’s past winners will be competing. The only past champions that will not be in the field this week, will be, Adrien Pendaries winner at the Winter Series Terre dei Consoli and Markus Brier winner at the 30th Gösser Open.
Current Order of Merit leader Italy’s Gregorio De Leo has already secured one of the 2023 Challenge Tour cards that is up for grabs at next week’s event. He holds an 8,201 points advantage over France’s Julien Sale (am) who is 2nd in the rank. In 3rd place, French amateur Tom Vaillant who is only 644.81 points behind his fellow compatriot. Italy’s Stefano Mazzoli, winner of the 1st event of the season, the 2022 Ein Bay Open is in 4th place with a 4,716.83 points deficit from 3rd place. Stefano Mazzoli has a 1,177.02 point advantage over Ireland’s Gary Hurley who is currently in 5th place.
There will be 120 players from 18 different nationalities competing for a prize fund of €40,000 and 45,000 points. The winner of the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open will earn € 5,800 and 6,525 Order of Merit points.
The format of the tournament is a 54 holes stroke play.

The Course-
Golf Club Castelconturbia is home to 27 holes that are divided into three different 9 holes courses. The courses were designed and built by Robert Trent Jones Sr. For this week’s tournament, the players will be competing on the blue and yellow course set up as a par 72.
Golf Club Castelconturbia has hosted the Italian Open in 1991 and 1998 and a Challenge Tour event in 2020. It has been ranked in the top 10 courses in Europe since 1987 as well as being one of the best courses in Italy. In 2003 Golf Club Castelconturbia won the award as the best overall course in Italy. The par 4, 7thhole of the yellow course has received international recognition as it was included in a British publication, “1001 Golf holes you must play before you die.”
The current course record is held by JM Olazabal and Costantino Rocca with a score of 66. The golf course is set between secular trees, small streams and lakes with an undulating ground which fits in perfectly with the surrounding countryside.
