Alessandro Tadini of Italy, had a brilliant bogey-free 8 under-par round 63 today for an overall 11under-par for the tournament, he holds a one shot lead over Gregorio De Leo. When he completed his round, Tadini was pleased to have been able to keep the momentum going from yesterday.“Today was a fabulous day, I was able to maintain yesterday’s positive feeling. I was able to make a lot of putts today which is very important for me as my long game has been sharp. I was able to make 5 birdies in my last 5 holes by holing a few important putts and hitting it close so I’m happy. I didn’t expect this round today but I’m looking forward to the rest of the tournament.”

Gregorio De Leo, currently holds the best round of the afternoon wave with 2 bogeys and 8 birdies for a 10 under-par 65. Gregorio is just one shot back of his fellow countryman, Alessandro Tadini.  When he concluded he round in tough conditions, he was very pleased, “I played very well without risking too much especially on the first 8 holes before the delay. I was 4 under-par putting for eagle on the 17th hole. After the delay I had a slow start but then managed to continue with a consistent play and birdie 2 out of the last 3 holes and unfortunately a disappointing bogey on my last hole of the day.” He was overall very pleased with his round especially in the conditions he was playing, “I wanted to have a good round today, I expected a good round after the start I had today. Maybe I didn’t expect the score but I am proud of my round.”

Koen Kouwenaar, had 3 birdies and 1 double bogey in his round today is currently 2 shots back of the lead. He wasn’t very pleased with his round today especially by not taking advantage of the par 5 that are reachable. “My game was rustier today, I struggled a little bit everywhere today and need to improve for tomorrow. When I mishit a shot today, I unfortunately hit it on the wrong place and at the wrong time. Especially on hole 10, I hit it in the water and made double bogey. I unfortunately didn’t take advantage of the par 5 that were reachable so unfortunately I’m not so happy with how I played.” Koen also talked about the conditions of today’s round by saying, “The pins were more difficult and the wind was swirling a bit which made it a bit more complicated.”

A past winner on the Alps Tour, Italy’s Stefano Pitoni, who yesterday was 1 shot back of the lead, now finds himself a couple shots back after a tough finish to his round today. Pitoni bogeyed 2 out of his last 3 holes to finish 1under-par for the day and 8 under-par for the tournament. After his round, he said: “I made a lot more mistakes today and the pins were much harder than yesterday. I found that the course was playing hard today then yesterday also for the humidity we had.”

Round 1  Quotes-

Netherland’s Koen Kouwenaar who turned professional at the end 2020 is currently playing in his first season on the Alps Tour, due to a wrist injury which ended up needing surgery last year. When Koen concluded his bogey-free 8 under-par round 63 he was very pleased and commented his game by saying, “I was solid all the way around with a decent putter and a consistent straight long irons which you need on this type of course. The greens are slightly smaller than usual but they are very good.” Koen hopes to conclude this week with a win but knows he “needs to stay in the process and not look at the results to quickly. It is very hard to finish it off so I need stay focused and not get carried away by the results.”

Jacobo Pastor currently 33 years old and a past winner on the Alps Tour shot a 7 under-par round today which included 9 birdies and 2 bogeys. After his round today, Pastor was pleased to comment on how well he played today, “I am very happy with today’s result. Starting with a -7 is fantastic and I hope to keep it going the rest of the week. Each player has its own strategy this week because you need to be straight from the tee shots otherwise you’ll be penalized and I prefer to hit a lot of 3 woods to have short irons into these greens to have more birdie opportunities.”  Pastor also said he started this season with a lot of expectations and wasn’t playing well but after being forced to stay home 2 weeks from having contracted COVID-19, he was able to re-evaluate his strategy and work method. He now “hopes this is the start of something very good.”

Italy’s Stefano Pitoni, 32 years old, a past winner on the Alps Tour had a consistent round today with 32 shots on the front nine and 32 shots on the back nine for a total 7 under-par 64. In his round, he had 1 eagle, 1 bogey and a total of 6 birdies. After his round, Stefano commented, “I am very happy about today, you have to be very precise of the tee on this course which I’m glad I was. I hit some amazing second shots and got lucky holing a couple long putts.”

Finland’s Eemil Alajarvi only 22 years old and playing his 7th event of this season had a great start to his first round here at the inaugural 2022 Molinetto Alps Open.  His round included 8 birdies and just one bogey for a 7 under-par 64. He started his round with 3 birdies on his front and continued with 1 bogey and 5 birdies on the back nine to end his round. After his round, Alajarvi commented on how well he played and how his game fitted this course. He said, “I played very solid and hit a lot of good approach shots and that made it easy to have a lot of birdie opportunities. I really like Molinetto Golf Club and it’s very good for my game as I don’t hit it very long but I hit it very straight so it fits my game very well.”

Milan, May 2nd 2022– After a two-week break, the tour returns this week for the 7th event of the season, the 2022 Molinetto Alps Open. The event will be played at Molinetto Golf and Country Club in Milan, Italy from Wednesday May 4th until Friday May 6th. The Field-

Manuel Morugan winner of the last Alps Tour tournament in Abruzzo and currently 13th in the Order of Merit will also be in the field this week. In addition, Stefano Mazzoli who is currently the highest-ranked player in the Order of Merit will also in the field this week. Mazzoli currently has a 1,092 points advantage over Portugal’s Tomas Bessa Guimaraes and both players have played all of this season’s previous events.

There will also be three current Challenge Tour players who are taking advantage of an off week to compete at the inaugural event. The three players are: Italy’s Enrico Di Nitto and Federico Maccario and Germany’s Dominic Foos.

There are 16 different nationalities represented among the 144 players competing this week. Throughout the 144 players the majority are representing Italy, Spain and France. The players will be competing for a prize fund of €40.000 and 45,000 Order of Merit points. The tournament winner will earn €5,800 and 6,525 Order of Merit points.

The Course-

Molinetto Golf and Country Club is a 5914 meters par 71 course. The course was built in the early 80s and was named after an old mill that was on the property when the course construction began. It was then redesigned in the early 90s by architect Luigi Rota Caremoli. Caremoli focused both the remodel of the tees and greens throughout the course, as well as the addition of new lakes and bunkers. A characteristic that remains true to Molinetto Golf and Country Club is its remarkable maintenance of its narrow fairways which require precision from each player.

Even though Molinetto Golf & Country Club has never previously hosted an Alps Tour event, the course gained recognition for hosting the 42* Italian Open in 1985. The event, held during the exact same dates, May 2nd through May 5th, 1985 saw Spain’s Manuel Piñero Sánchez triumphant with a total score of 276, only one shot away from Sam Torrance, close second. This tournament also saw Seve Ballesteros in close contention, closing in 5th place.

Being a new event on the schedule, it is sure to be an intriguing week where players will be subject to a new course, and its subsequent conditions. At the end of the event, we will have an inaugural winner of this Alps Tour stop with a new tournament score record for this course.

Tournament Promoter-

Like the rest of the Alps Tour events played in Italy, this event is organized by the Italian Pro Tour, which is a branch of the Italian Golf Federation who promotes all professional golf events. The main sponsors that support the Italian Pro Tour include DS Automobiles, Fideuram, Kappa and Eureco. In addition, their media partners are the following three Italian newspapers: Corriere dello Sport, Tuttosport and Il Giornale. The Italian Pro Tour featured social partner is Sport Senza Frontiere Onlus with official advisor, Infront.
