The 8th edition of the Memorial Giorgio Bordoni is ready to get underway.
Como, May 23rd 2022– After a week off, the tour returns to the Northwestern part of Italy for the 8th edition of the Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon. The event will be played at Golf Club La Pinetina near Como, Italy from Wednesday 25th May until Friday 27th May. On Tuesday 24th May, the traditional best ball aggregate to par pro-am with 25 teams will take place.
This event is named and dedicated to highly acclaimed golf instructor, Giorgio Bordoni who unexpectedly passed away at the age of 48 in 2013. In 1991 he was one of the founders of the Blue Team Golf Academy, a unique and innovative initiative in the world of coaching. He worked many years for the Italian Golf Federation as a National Coach earning many accomplishments during his career.
The tournament has reached its 8th edition this year and has been a consistent stop on the Alps Tour schedule since 2014, except for 2020 when the event wasn’t played due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Field-
This tournament has some notable past champions. The first edition of the tournament was won by Spain’s Borja Virto in 2014, while Spain’s Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez came to victory in 2019. Another Spanish victory occurred in 2021 with the current defending champion Angel Hidalgo Portillo winning with a total score of 14 under-par. Meanwhile current DP World Tour player, Italy’s Guido Migliozzi triumphed in 2018. From 2015 to 2018 the tournament was won by Italian players: Marco Crespi, Stefano Pitoni, Guido Migliozzi and Andrea Perrino all of whom have been able to honor their fellow colleague, Giorgio Bordoni with their victories.
The majority of this seasons past winners that include: Italy’s Stefano Mazzoli currently 2nd in the Order of Merit, France’s amateur Oihan Guillamoundeguy and Portugal’s Tomas Bessa Guimaraes currently 3rd in the Order of Merit will be competing for the 8th Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon title. However, two of this season’s past champions will not be playing, Markus Brier, the winner at the 30th Gösser Open and Koen Kouwenaar the winner at the 2022 Molinetto Alps Open and the current Alps Tour Order of Merit Leader.
There will be 144 players competing for a prize fund of €40,000 and 45,000 points. The winner of the 8th Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon will earn € 5,800 and 6,525 Order of Merit points.
The Course-
Golf Club La Pinetina in Como, Italy is a very undulating 5761 meters par 70 course. It was designed by Harris Albertini Mezzalane and opened for play in 1971. It offers beautiful panoramic views of the nearby landscape that include the view of Monte Rosa which is the second highest mountain in Italy.
Golf Club La Pinetina covers 70 hectars in the Appiano Gentile Pine Forest, rich of pine trees, oak and chestnut trees as well as Scotch pine and birch trees. It’s not a particularly long course, however the complex course design situated on a very hilly terrain, requires accuracy and precise strategy from each player. Thanks to the natural layout of this golf course, players will find notable holes that will allow this course to stand out from the rest.

This week, Aon is the tournament Presenting Sponsor at the Memorial Giorgio Bordoni 2022. Aon is also a worldwide partner of Ryder Cup 2023 that will be played at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy.
Like the majority of the Alps Tour events played in Italy, this event is organized by the Italian Pro Tour, which is a branch of the Italian Golf Federation. They promote the majority of the professional golf events that are played in Italy. The main sponsors that support the Italian Pro Tour include DS Automobiles, Fideuram, Kappa, Rinascente and Eureco. In addition, their media partners are the following three Italian newspapers: Corriere dello Sport, Tuttosport and Il Giornale. Frenchman rookie Lacroix seals second win of the season with incredible low aggregate (-28)
11 May, 2019 – Guadalajara (Esp) – Frenchman rookie Frederic Lacroix won Alps de Las Castillas on Golf de Valdeluz with an incredibly low aggregate of 188 shots, -28, leaving his closest competitor – local hero Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez – four strokes back, at -24.
Lacroix, 24, debuted last February on the professional stage by winning the first tournament of the season, Ein Bay Open in Egypt. After some inconsistent results in the following tournaments – two missed cuts, two 25th positions and one 12th – he felt that his game was back on track, thanks to a new driver which gave him the confidence he had lost somehow. With one double-bogey 5 on the first round, on hole 12 – the only mistake he made in 54 holes – 26 birdies and 2 eagles, Lacroix was never really threatened today, as overnight co-leader Edgar Catherine (Fra) slipped back a little, settling for a third place at -23 tied with Julien Foret (Fra), Felix Schulz (Aut) and Antonio Hortal (Esp). The only critical moment came when Garcia made birdie-eagle on holes 13 and 14 against two complicated pars of Lacroix, so narrowing the gap, but the advantage that Lacroix had at that moment was still quite comfortable – 3 strokes – and the Frenchman was not in the mood for loosing his momentum.
« In a course like this, you know that you need to go low, because your competitors will make a lot of birdies, but at the same time you also know that you cannot force birdies, you just have to be patient and focussed – said Lacroix, showing a high rate of maturity both in his game and in his attitude. « On the first tee this morning my expectations were for winning, of course. I was here to win, I felt it could be possible again because my game was good this week, and when you play well, you have to win ! ». Lacroix’s cheque is worth 6,960 euros out of a total prize money of 48,000 euros ; Garcia’s winnings is 4,728 euros.
Garcia Rodriguez, who was playing in the same match with Lacroix, had his own « army » of followers who were warmly supporting their hero : « It was fun actually, and they were fair, they applauded also to my and Edgar’s good shot. It is nice to see many spectators on the course ».
Garcia Rodriguez has kept the lead of the Order of Merit with 17,297 points, followed by Lacroix (15,517 points). The top 5 at the end of the season will be promoted to the Challenge Tour.
Next tournament is in just 5 days (May 16-18) on beautiful GC Erzherzog Johann at Maria Lankowitz, Graz, in Austria.

Perfect day to score low at Valdeluz, four share the lead at -10
Contenders of the Alps de Las Castillas in Spain took advantage of the perfect weather conditions to go low in the first round at Golf de Valdeluz (Guadalajara). Chill and strong winds experienced yesterday during the Pro-Am (won by the team of Italian Luca Cianchetti) gave way today to sunshine and milder temperatures, more appropriate in this season and in this part of the world, and 117 players scored under par (out of 144).
The course, situated some 60 km North-East of Madrid, showed some kindness to most of the players, leaving them plenty of birdie chances – statistics report a total of 843 birdies and 53 eagles on 18 holes – with only few bogeys (299) to stain their cards. On top of the leaderboard seat four players: a duo of young French rookies, Pierre Pineau, 19 years old from Paris La Boulie and Edgar Catherine, 20, from Aix-en-Provence, who returned two very similar bogey-free scores, both with eagle on hole 11 (a par 5) and eight birdies; Order of Merit leader, Spaniard Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez, 30, with one eagle (hole 14), one bogey (hole 17) and 9 birdies; and experienced Frenchman Xavier Poncelet, 33, from Bordeaux, who finished his front nine with an eagle-2 at hole 18 and totalled eight birdies, five of them in a row towards the end of his round, from hole 4 to 8.
« It was pretty good round – sayd Pineau, who has played 4 out of 6 tournaments in-money with 2 top-tens – my long game was not great today but chipping and putting was very solid. I made a good eagle on 11 holing a 5 metres putt, and a 20 mt putt on 17 for birdie brought me to minus 9, giving me the sprint to finish with another birdie on 18. Tomorrow’s strategy will be the same as today, hit as many drivers as I can trying to repeat the same solid short game ».
« I didn’t have to make really long putts today – said Edgar, number 35 in the Order of Merit after six tournaments – the longest were from 5 metres at hole 6 and 10 metres for par at 16, otherwise I was generally pretty close to the hole. My eagle came after a super drive, 136 mt to the flag, I hit my wedge at 1.5 metres and made the putt. All my game was pretty regular and tuned today, during my practice rounds I realized that the course could give good chances to score low – which is always good fun in tournaments! – and I thought that I should try and be among those who would go a lot under par… which I did, so I’m happy I’ve reached this first goal ».
« I’ve played very well and solid the whole day – said Garcia Rodriguez, who won three weeks ago in Italy and was second in a Challenge Tour event in Spain, last week – the course is in good conditions and I could hit the ball the way I wanted. It’s obviously a favourable moment for me, I’m trying to accumulate as many points as I can in order to keep the top positions in the Order of Merit and have an easier second part of the season for grabbing one of the card for the Challenge Tour ».
« Today? It was obviously very good!! – loughed Poncelet, who debuted in the Alps Tour in 2009 – my driving above all, but everything worked really well, I’ve hit 18 greens in regulation or better. Tomorrow I think it will depend much on the wind, today in the afternoon it picked up quite a lot – I haven’t played this course with no wind yet, so we will see. This year I didn’t start the season at my best, I think I was still suffering from the final place of last season – one outside those admitted to the Challenge Tour – so I’ve changed a couple of things during the winter, and now all the pieces are finally coming together ».

A strong field awaits Alps de las Castillas
In two more days, the 2019 Alps Tour schedule will resume in Spain with a very much awaited event, Alps de las Castillas hosted by Golf Valdeluz in Guadalajara, on May 9-11. It is the second time since 2015 that the tournament visits this beautiful course, 66 km North-East of Madrid, featuring a top-level field. Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez, leader of the Order of Merit, will have all eyes on him not only because he plays at home, but also because after winning the Abruzzo Open in Italy, less than three weeks ago, he added a prestigious tied second place in the Challenge de Espana last week, thus confirming his solid and consistent form. Not to mention that he won this same tournament in 2017, on a different course but only few minutes from Valdeluz!
Garcia Rodriguez will have fierce competitors, though, since five out of six winners of this season have entered the tournament – apart from Spaniard Garcia Rodriguez also Frenchman Fred Lacroix, Englishman Ben Wheeler, Austrian Lukas Nemecz and Italian Luca Cianchetti, a very cosmopolitan delegation! – as well as most of the top players in the ranking.
A total of 210 entries were recorded for this tournament, with only 144 spots available. The rich prize money – 48,000 euros, with a winner’s cheque of 6,960 euros – was certainly one of the reasons for this success together with the attractiveness of the venue, but even more attractive is the desire of gaining points and positions in the Order of Merit, with the final goal of grabbing one of the five spots at stake for the Challenge Tour at the end of the season.

The Valdeluz Golf course has already hosted the event back in 2015, when the title went to Spaniard Jesus Legarrea, helped by a record second round in 61 and an aggregate of minus 20, one stroke better of Italian Stefano Pitoni who is in the field again this year and will try to find back his old form. Defending champion, Frenchman Thomas Elissalde, winner last year on a different venue at Leon Golf, is also attending, as well as Irishman Conor O’Rourke, one of the two players he defeated in playoff.
Alps de las Castillas is the first of the four Alps Tour events (also counting the Qualifying School, taking place in December) hosted in Spain in 2019. The Valdeluz course is characterized by wide greens an ondulating terrain and a great diversity of hazards that require a variety of shots. Ramón Espinosa’s design plays with broad fairways and strategically placed obstacles that ask players to think a proper strategy before playing each shot.

Garcia Rodriguez is no surprise, wins Abruzzo Open Dailies Total 1
It was only a question of time for Spaniard Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez until he could raise a winning trophy again after that title he had conquered two years ago in the Alps de Las Castillas, in Spain defeating compatriot Adria Arnaus in playoff. Since the first tournaments of the 2019 season, Sebas showed the solid form that made him win Abruzzo Open Dailies Total 1 with two strokes margin and took him on top of the Order of Merit after six tournaments.
Garcia Rodriguez, 30, started the competition with a 65 (-6) and a tied second place after the first day on beautiful Miglianico Golf & CC, but was leading solo in the following round at -11, and was able to keep those 2-strokes margin also at the end of the third and final day with another 66 and a total -16, in spite of the « attacks » of other in-form players, like Italian Edoardo Lipparelli who eventually settled for a second place at -14.
« I’m very proud and happy I could finally win here in Italy », said Garcia Rodriguez, « I feel I’m on the right track that hopefully will lead me to the European Tour in the end, and in order to reach this goal I’m going to train and work as hard as ever. There’s no secret, I think that only hard work gets you where you wish to be, and that’s what I’ve been doing to finally win again ; but there’s always space for improving, you never have to be content ».
In Seba’s scorecards, only two bogeys in three rounds (none today) and 18 birdies (5 today) to get the winner’s cheque – 5,800 euros out of a 40,000 prize money : « I had been playing well for a while, but on the greens I had some troubles ; here in Miglianico, the greens were very good and I’ve putted really well, that was certainly the key ».
Lipparelli, 22, was feeling a bit exhausted after six weeks of tournaments in a row, where he actually performed quite well winning the French Qualifying School and adding a sixth place in the Italian National Championship to the very good scores he had in the Egyptian Winter series (a 2nd place in the Dreamland Pyramids Open and two more top tens) ; his rewards is the third place in the Order of Merit with 12.265 points – very close to the leader Garcia (12.569 pt) and fellow compatriot Lorenzo Scalise, second (12.437 pt) – and a pleasing sum of 10,930 euros after 6 tournaments.
In third place, Frenchman Julien Foret at -13 and fourth is Swiss Mathias Eggenberger at -11. A special mention goes to rookie Dutch Pierre Verlaar, who had an incredible aggregate of 28 strokes on the front nine with 8 birdies and a single bogey ; in the back nine his rythm slowed down – « On hole 12 I missed my birdie putt with a horse-shoe over the hole, and I’ve lost a bit of confidence there », he said – but nevertheless he finished with a 66 (-5) on 8th place with a total on -9.
The Alps Tour schedule will resume in three weeks in Spain, with Alps de las Castillas hosted by Golf Valdeluz in Guadalajara on May 9-11.

Alps de Andalucia in Santa Clara Golf Granada
Much more than the victory at stake in Santa Clara Golf Granada
With just two tournaments to finish the 2017 season, the calculators are smoking. A victory in the Alps de Andalucia could be a key in the aspirations of many players who are in Granada this week. There are several names that have to prove their good form to ensure that top 5 final in the Order of Merit, among them Adrià Arnaus or Navarrese David Borda.

This week is also special for a young Miguel Ángel Jiménez Jr. The son of the several times winner on European Tour arrives in Granada with an overwhelmed illusion and with the desire to enjoy a great week of golf. “Step by step I am assimilating and getting used to the professional world in which it is clear that it is necessary to take a lot of experience and in which, obviously, there are many differences with respect to my amateur stage; I am playing with a lot of head and knowing that the good punches are there, that I have a solid game and that I have nothing to envy in the game to anyone with what the objective is clear: go out to enjoy and let the golf that I carry inside flow “, argued a Miguel Angel Jiménez Jr who knows, perfectly and first hand, the professional world in which it begins this year.

Maiden win for Garcia Rodriguez on home soil
Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez sealed maiden victory on Alps Tour defeating his fellow countryman young amateur Adria Arnaus after first extra hole.
The 28 year old player from Madrid only needed one extra hole to win Alps de Las Catillas trophy. This tournament shown a different face every day. The first round was in Dutch hands with Van Meijel leading, the second round was blue-white and red thanks to Jérôme Lando-Casanova but the ultimate round, the one that matters offered a 100% Spanish podium.
The overnight leader did not manage to keep same pace while Spaniards dug their advantage birdie after birdie. David Borda finished third thanks to final 68, -10. Adria Arnaus signed for the best score of the day tie, 65 to go to -13 total and Sebastian Garcia recorded 66 for same total as he holed birdie on the last regular hole.
Experience helped Garcia to keep nerves of steel during the play-off. He earns the second biggest check of his career, 6960 €.
