Round 2 suspended with Martin Couvra leading the provisional field at Terre dei Consoli

Italy, March 17, 2022 – The daily schedule for R2 of the Winter Series Terre dei Consoli was pretty tight due to yesterday’s delayed starting times.

66 players had to end their first round early this morning and get ready to start for R2.
When R1 was over, Italian Giacomo Fortini, 25, from Cus Ferrara Golf Club, and Spaniard Jose Manuel Pardo Benitez, 23, from Golf Valdeluz, were tied for the lead at -6 (66 strokes).

Both Fortini and Pardo Benitez during the first day had a bogey free round without mistakes and with the right amount of birdies to take them on top of the leaderboard.

Due to the fog delay accumulated on the previous day, R2 started when the first round was still on, and therefore only part of the field managed to end the 36 holes. Today the game was suspended at 18h04 due to darkness, with 20 matches (60 players) still on the course; the round will resume tomorrow morning at 07h20 to decide the cut and the players making it to the final 18 holes.

French amateur Martin Couvra, just 19 years old, from Golf de Terre Blanche, winner of the Qualifying School held last November here at Terre dei Consoli and at Golf Nazionale, took the provisional lead at -11 after R2.

Today the young man carded a solid 65 with 8 birdies and just one bogey on 3rd hole and moved up on the leaderboard reaching the top quickly. In fact, after R1 he was tied on 9th place with other 7 golfers. “This course is really cool and I really enjoy playing here. It’s really important to have a good game both on the short and on the long game to manage a very low score. I’ve been driving the ball straight off the tee which allowed me to get nice lies to attack the greens. I’m very proud of my game, specially for my putts which was one of the best part today”.

It is a 6 way-tie for the provisional 2nd place with a total score of -8, but only three players have already signed their scorecards: Irishman Gary Hurley from West Waterford GC, who finished the first round on T9; Frenchman Franck Daux from Exclusive Golf Cely; and Italian Giacomo Fortini, co-leader after R1; while Spaniard Manuel Elvira, 25,from Llanes GC, Italian Stefano Mazzoli, 25, winner of the 2022 Ein Bay Open, and Frenchman Adrien Pendaries will all be among those who will have to hit the course tomorrow at sunrise to end R2.

Gary Hurley said that “even if it was a long day, I’ve been playing very well. I ha 2 great days of golf in a row which is awesome. Let’s hope for tomorrow”.

It was a long day for Franck Daux: I had to play 26 holes in a row with no break in between the two rounds. I managed to play very well off the tee and to give me some good chances to attack the greens form a short distance. I’m very happy with my daily score and I’m preparing myself for tomorrow“.

Giacomo Fortini said: “The course is pretty long but it is very firm so it doesn’t play as long as it is. Greens are in great shape. Yesterday I’ve been putting better and today I did not holed as many putts as I wanted to but I’m happy with this result”.

Today the course was a little bit easier than yesterday. Front nine looked more attackable and have allowed players to waste less strokes.

The cut is projected at -1 but it will depends on tomorrow morning scores. The final round will start right after the cut is set.

R1 suspended with a 5 way-tie provisional lead at Terre dei Consoli

Italy, March 16, 2022 – This morning, due to persistent fog, starting times of the Winter Series held at Terre dei Consoli Golf Club have been delayed by 2 hours and 66 players have not been able to finish their first round.

Therefore, those who played late in the afternoon today, will have to start early tomorrow morning and finish the missing holes before re-starting for R2.

It is a 5 way-tie for the provisional lead with 67 strokes: Spaniard Manuel Elvira, 25, Italian Stefano Mazzoli, 25, winner of the Ein Bay Open last February, Frenchman Pierre Pineau, 22, from Le Vaudreuil, who finished 3rd in the first tournament of the season this year at Sokhna Golf Club and his two compatriots Benjamin Kedochim from Biarritz Le Phare Golf Club, and Adrien Pendaries, son of European Tour player Marc.

Elvira concluded the front nine holes in 35 strokes with one bogey on 3rd and two birdies on 4th and 9th. Then, he scored a great bogey free back nines where he added 4 birdies on 10th, 11th, 15th and 17th.

Today the weather conditions were perfect, a little breeze, but super nice. It was just a little bit annoying to have to wait for two hours because of the fog, but we couldn’t control it. The course is in great shape, quite firm, but the ball on the greens rolled pretty good. My game was very solid specially around the greens where I made some good up & downs during the day and some good putts as well”.

Mazzoli went through a solid start this morning. He made 7 pars in a row and a birdie on 8th during the front nine. Then, he went through some up and downs with an eagle on 11th and two double bogeys on 12th and 13th. However, he came out of this situation quickly, recovering with 4 birdies in a row from 14th to 17th. “Even if the rough is low, it is very important to stay on the right way. It’s a shame because I made 2 mistakes on the 12th , which to me is the easiest hole on the course, and on 13thwhere I had a bad bounce and I did not manage to have an up & down. However, I’m happy with this daily score and hope to continue like this also tomorrow”.

Pineau had a slow start making 7 pars in a row on the front nine but then he holed 5 birdies from 8th to 12th. “The course is very firm and it is very difficult to hit iron shots close to the pin”.

Same feeling for Benjamin Kedochim who went on the roller-coaster today. He carded 3 bogeys, 1 double bogey and 3 birdies on the front nine and 2 eagles and 2 birdies on the back nine. “I’ve been driving and putting very well even if I’ve missed some fairways and some putts too. I love this course because it drives you through easier holes where you can easily make birdie to holes where if you don’t hit the ball as you should, you are not gonna leave the hole safe. Just look at my scorecard. Anyway, inside 3 meters, I’ve holed everything, all the important putts”.

Adrien Pendaries did not make lots of mistakes here during R1 at Terre dei Consoli. “I’ve been driving off the tee as I wanted to. The greens and the fairways are very firm and being able to have a great lie is very important”. He just scored a bogey on 9thhole but he finished R1 scoring 4 birdies and 1 eagle. “Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be sharper with my wedges and be able to put the ball closer to the pin. It is such a fun to play here”.

French Julien Sale, who has been one of the best amateur player in Egypt, finishing on 3rd place at 2022 New Giza Open, today ended up his round with 68 strokes, tied on 6th place. He has lost some shots on the front nine but he came out on the back nine where he carded 7 birdies. “The course is a little different from the last time I played it during the Qualifying School. I’ve been struggling during the front nine and almost nothing of my game was working. Then, suddenly something clicked and I managed to hole a lot of putts and I made 7 birdies in 9 holes which is incredible. I only have to work on a couple of things to have a better start tomorrow”.

Today the front nine holes were a little bit easier than the back nine. In fact, players on the first ten positions lost 13 strokes on the front nine holes while from 10th to 18th they lost just 6 strokes. In particular, the 3rd hole, a par 3, enrolled a significant number of bogey and proved to be the hardest of the course.

Tomorrow round 1 will resume at 7:20.

Qualifying School 2021 – Final Stage Round 2 – Martin Couvra Moves into the Lead

November 11th, Rome, 2021 – Heavy rain overnight left the courses a little water-logged this morning, so tee-off was pushed back an hour to 9:30 am. This did not rattle the French amateur player, Martin Couvra, who after finishing joint second yesterday, kept his cool to win the second round of the 2021 Alps Tour Qualifying School with a total of -9 (135) for the two rounds. Starting from the 10th he  carded a 68 (-4) for the day with six birdies and two bogeys on the Terre dei Consoli Golf Club course.

“I played pretty well on the outward nine. I made some good pars and had three birdies. I had a bit of a difficult patch from the 1st to the 5th where I played well but my putting was off, and I made a mistake on the 5th which cost me a bogey. After that I started putting better and was a bit more opportunistic. I really enjoyed playing today but I love both courses, each very different styles but both great.”

As yesterday, the amateurs made a strong showing with two more, Andrea Romano from Italy and Clement Poletti from France, in a three-way tie for second position on -6 (138). Making up the trio was Lars Keunen from the Netherlands, an experienced Alps Tour player and winner of the 2020 Ein Bay Open.

All three players were out on the on the Golf Nazionale. Playing off tee number 1, first into the clubhouse was Andrea Romano who carded a 67 (-5) today with just one bogey and six birdies. « I’m really happy today because my long game was pretty solid as was my putting. I just want to stay focussed for tomorrow and win this qualification.”

Next in was Lars Keunen who signed a 68 (-4). Off the 10th, he had three birdies and a double bogey out, then two more birdies, a single bogey and an eagle to save his spot.

Clement Poletti had an error-free front nine off the 1st with three birdies to which he added two more and a bogey coming in.

Results were much more balanced on the two courses today as of the 25 players coming in under par, 14 were on the Golf Nazionale and 11 on Terre dei Consoli Golf Club

The cut came at +3 (147) meaning that 70 players move forward to the Final Round. A total of 49 pros and 21 amateurs successfully made the cut and will tee off at 8:00 am on the Golf Nazionale tees one and ten. All of them will be vying for one of the full category cards for the Alps Tour 2022 season but with only 35 available, the competition will be fierce.

Qualifying School 2021 – Final Stage Round 1- Oihan Guillamoundeguy Leader

November 10th, Rome, 2021 – At the end of play today, the amateurs took the honours. Leader on -6 (66) is the French amateur, Oihan Guillamoundeguy, 16, who had six birdies and zero bogeys at the Terre dei Consoli Golf Club.

“I’m very pleased. I played really well. I didn’t do any bogeys which helped a lot. My irons’ game was great, so I managed to do a few birdies. The course was good and not as wet as the Golf Nazionale.”

Two more amateurs are among the three players in second place on -5 (67). Alongside the Italian pro, Alessandro Notaro, is Jose Manuel Pardo Benitez from Spain and Martin Couvra from France.

Notaro, like the leader, played at Terre dei Consoli Golf Club and started in style with an eagle on the 10th. Straight pars to finish the outward nine and then three birdies coming in.

“I started from hole 10 at Terre and holed the second shot for an eagle so that was a good start, then I had 3 birdies and played regular. I played very well from tee to green”.

The two other amateurs in third place were out on the Golf Nazionale where conditions were complicated by the wind. Jose Manuel Pardo Benitez had six birdies and just one bogey in his round. He intends to turn pro in January and hopes to gain a full Alps Tour card here:

“My day was perfect. I did good drives, great putts. I had seventeen greens in regulation which I think is really important here. I had the wind on the last five holes but managed to keep my concentration”.

Martin Couvra, the 18-year-old amateur from Terre Blanche Golf Club, also had six birdies and a bogey in this, his third Alps Tour tournament:

“I played pretty well all day. I was quite far from the pin but tried to stay patient and holed some good putts for birdie. It’s not an easy course and you have to put your drives on the fairway as many of them are tight and then different sized greens, so you need complete game skills. I’m happy to have done well on it today. I’ve already played two Alps Tour events by invitation in France, the Mirabelle d’Or, where I made the cut one out of two times but here it’s different as we’re playing for a whole season slot, so the pressure is higher.”

Only five players broke par at the Golf Nazionale today, and the remaining three were all French amateurs: Guillaume Chevalier -3 (69), Maxence Giboudot and Nicolas Calvet -1 (71). Whereas, over on Terre dei Consoli Golf Club, twenty players came in at one under or less.

The playing field will be levelled tomorrow as the players switch courses for the second round and windy conditions expected again on the Golf Nazionale. Both courses can expect light showers in the morning. Tee off begins at 8:00 am from the 1st and 10th at each club.

Qualifying School 2021 – Final Stage for the Rising Stars of Tomorrow

November 8th, Rome, 2021 – In just under 48 hours the Final Stage of the Alps Tour 2021 Qualifying School will get under way.  The 54 holes of stroke play will take place at two courses: the Italian Golf Federation owned Golf Nazionale and the neighbouring Terre dei Consoli Golf Club.

144 players from 22 different home countries are lined up to tee off on Wednesday. The excitement was palpable among the 69 qualifiers from last week’s First Stage. They will join the 75 other eligible players who automatically qualified for the Final Stage and play alternate 18 holes on each course over the first two days. After 36 holes at the end of play on Thursday, the field will be cut to the leading 65 players and those players tied on the final qualifying place score. The final round will be held at the Golf Nazionale.

The top scoring 35 players at the end of the final round will obtain a full Category 6 for the Alps Tour 2022 season.

Players making the cut of the Final Stage and finishing between the 36th and the 65th position will be eligible for membership in Category 8 of the Alps Tour for the 2022 season.

Players between the 66th and the 144th position will be eligible for membership in Category 9 of the Alps Tour for the 2022 season.

The two courses offer quite different challenges for the players. Terre dei Consoli Golf Club was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr who described his course philosophy thus: “All my courses are symphonies with dominant themes. They have crescendos and lulls. There are different rhythms, you can feel the changes.” Terre dei Consoli Golf Club open parkland layout gently follows the natural contours of the undulating terrain of the location. The perfectly integrated obstacles raise the technical level with signature hole 9, an island green par 3, an absolute delight.

The Golf Nazionale, a Jim and George Fazio design is recognized as one of the best courses in continental Europe. It follows the natural contours of the hilly terrain of the area, with some marvellous panoramas, featuring elevation changes, forced carries, deep rough, undulating greens, numerous strategically placed bunkers, and several water hazards.

Weatherwise, the first day could be a case of dejà-vu for many of the players from last week’s First Stage as strong wind gusts are forecast. Things should settle down on Thursday and Friday promises to be near perfect for golf.

Qualifying School 2021 – First Stage Round 2 Results – Donnelly, De Haas & Ferchaud Victors

November 5th, 2021 – And the winners are: Luke Donnelly from Ireland, Floris De Haas from the Netherlands and Hermes Ferchaud from France on each of the respective courses. The additional winners are the 22 other players at each venue who have qualified for the 2021 Alps Tour Qualifying School Final Stage next week.

At the Miglianico Golf and Country Club, yesterday’s joint leader, Luke Donnelly, maintained his dominant position, carding a -7 (133) for the two rounds. Starting from the 1st tee, he had a birdie and a bogey for par on the front nine and then four birdies and two bogeys to finish on 68 (-2) for the day.

“Two very enjoyable days. The golf course was very good. I loved it from the first day I played it on Tuesday. Course was set up brilliantly by the Alps team. Greens were fantastic. Even after all the rain today they held up lovely.”

In second place was the Belgian, Giovanni Tadiotto, on -6 (134) after today’s round of 65 (-5) and in third place was yesterday’s joint leader, Joel Ramirez Martin the amateur player from Spain, on -3 (137) with a 72 (+2).

The cut for the 23 available slots at Miglianico Golf and Country Club, came at +4 (144) and there was a seven-way play-off for the five spots remaining. The two non-qualifiers take reserve positions for the Final Stage in the event of withdrawals.

Another leader from yesterday, Floris De Haas, held good at the Golf Club Le Fonti to win with -4 (138). The Dutch player had five birdies and four bogeys for a 70 (-1) today.

The course was very playable, and conditions were good but there was only one thing that we wanted to do which was to reach the Final Stage and go to Rome and we did that. I hope the course in Rome as good as this one as it was very enjoyable to play here at Le Fonti.”

Joint runners-up were two English players, Russell Chrystie, yesterday’s other joint leader and Adam Sagar on -2 (140). Chrystie shot a 71 (+1) today and Sagar a 68 (-3). At Golf Club Le Fonti the cut was at +8 (150).

Winner at the Acaya Golf Club was the French player Hermes Ferchaud at level par 142. One eagle, four birdies and a single birdie gave him a 66 (-5) for the round.

“It went pretty well over the two days. Overall, my game was good. I had a strong long game, and my putting was decent. But I was really helped by my best friend who came to caddy for me here and who will be with me in Rome now. He’s a great putter and was a great help with reading the lines. The first round was really difficult as, honestly, I’ve never played such a difficult course with so much wind, but I’m really happy.”

Yesterday’s joint leaders, Ben Schmidt from England and the Swedish player, Filip Lundell were just behind him on +1 (143) with the cut at +11 (154).

The players now head to Rome for the Final Stage which takes place at two adjacent course, the Golf Nazionale and Terre dei Consoli from November 10th to 12th where the ultimate battle for the precious cards for the 2022 Alps Tour season are at stake.

Qualifying School 2020 Final – Round 2 – Will Heffernan Fires 65 To Take The Lead

November 18th, 2020 – Rome, Italy – With the best score of the day on both courses, a resounding 65 (-7), Will Heffernan from Australia took the lead with an overall -9 (135) after 36 holes.

Teeing off on the Terre dei Consoli Golf Club course from the first, the player from Down Under started in style with a birdie. He finished the first nine with three more, started the back nine with another birdie, dropped a shot with a single bogey but recovered with three more birdies coming home.

“I’m confident with the putter. The putter and the driver in fact but it’s all about the putting here as it’s quite wide off the tee. I holed a lot of putts today and that’s always gonna get it done, isn’t it? So far, I’m doing everything pretty well so I can’t complain”.

Winner last week on the Golf Club Parco de’ Medici course, he heads into the final round at the Golf Nazionale with the same approach:

“You’ve got to plot your way around the course. It’s going to be soft as I’m sure the grass is still wet there. So, just put yourself on the fairway and try to give yourself as many birdie opportunities as possible”.

Two strokes behind him on the same course, preserving his second place from yesterday is the American Blaire McKeithen. He had a grand total of 7 birdies and would have been joint leader if not for two bogeys on each nine to give him a 67(-5) for the day and an overall -7 (137).

Over on the Golf Nazionale, the Englishman Jack Trewhitt signed a 68 (-4) with just one bogey today to put him in third place with -6 (138).

In joint fourth place, Paul McBride from Ireland on the Terre dei Consoli Golf Club and Javier Gallegos Marsal from Spain on the Golf Nazionale are both at -5 (139). The two players came in at 69 (-3) for the day.

Tied for sixth after their rounds on the Golf Nazionale, yesterdays leader, the Irishman, Simon Bryan, and Will Porter from Scotland sit at -4 (140). Three birdies and two bogeys for Bryan for a 71(-1) today, whilst the Scotsman had six birdies and a lone bogey for a 67 (-5), six shots better than yesterday.

The highest amateur on the leader board is the French player Paul Margolis, at -3 (141) in eighth position. He had another steady round today on the Golf Nazionale with two birdies and a bogey for a 71 (-1).

Also on the Golf Nazionale, a trio of players share ninth place at -2 (142). The two Dutchmen, Philip Bootsma and Koen Kouwenaar both shot a 69 (-3) who are joined by the Italian player, Giovanni Craviolo.

The cut came at +7 with 16 amateurs among the 73 players coming through. The Final Round tees off tomorrow from the 1st and 10th tees of the Golf Nazionale to decide who gets category 6 (top 35 and ties) or category 8 (from 36th to 73rd) on the Alps Tour next year.

Those players who did not make the cut will be eligible for membership in category 9 of the Alps Tour for the 2021 season.

The weather forecast looks to be smiling on the Final as sunny skies and light winds are forecast for tomorrow.

Qualifying School 2020 Final – Simon Bryan Leads After Round One

November 17th, 2020 – Rome, Italy – Blustery conditions made play difficult today but after the first eighteen holes, the Irishman, Simon Bryan is in the lead by one stroke from his nearest contender at -3 (69).

The 28-year old player from Druids Heath Golf Club in County Wicklow is not unfamiliar with such meteorological conditions:

“It was very windy; it was basically like being back at home but just with much warmer weather. So, keeping the ball’s flight down was pretty handy and with some of the greens being soft we could get at some of the flags, but you had to pay attention with being short sided. It was good, I kept ball in hand pretty much most of the day and when I was out of position on the greens, I just tried to put it close”.

Playing on the Terre dei Consoli course, Bryan teed off from the 1st making one bogey on each nine and a total of 5 birdies.  Having arrived early in Italy, he has got to know the course well:

“I’ve been here for three weeks. As soon we went into lockdown, I straightaway got onto the Alps Tour and then I got the General Manager’s email and we asked if we could come over and practice and they were more than happy to have us over. So I’ve been playing this golf course for three weeks solid. There were a couple of times today that I didn’t even look at the yardage book and just hit the shot. So, it was really nice to have that and it helped big time. We also got in a couple of practice rounds on the Golf Nazionale, so that’s tomorrow and I’m looking forward to it. I have a good game plan in place which is key on that course.”

There is a bit of a bottleneck in second position with seven players sitting at -2 (70). Three of them also played the Terre dei Consoli course; Javier Gallegos Marsal from Spain and two English players; Jack Trewhitt and Thomas Thurloway. The other four players were on the Golf Nazionale course today including the leader’s compatriot, Paul McBride. From the USA, we see Blaire McKeithen who briefly took the lead during the day and Will Heffernan from Australia, winner at Golf Club Parco de’ Medici in the First Qualifying round. The final slot is filled by the French amateur Paul Margolis.

In joint ninth place at -1 (71), is the top-ranked amateur present, Eduard Rousaud from Spain who had the only bogey-free round of the day.  He is joined by Alan De Bondt from Belgium, Alessandro Notaro from Italy and Victor Trehet from France.

Eagles were few and far between today, but the French amateur, Carl Bertrand, finished his round at the Golf Nazionale with one on the par 5 18th .  He is among the next group of five players at Par (72). The other eagle was from the Italian Guglielmo Bravetti who scored a hole-in-one on the par 3 9th. He is in the dozen players at +1 (73).

The players switch courses tomorrow for the second round at the end of which comes the cut to 65 players. The weather promises to be sunny and the wind should drop.

Qualifying School 2020 – All Set For The Final Stage

November 14th, 2020 – Rome, Italy – With the play-offs of the First Stage completed yesterday, the 144 players in the Final Stage of the Alps Tour Qualifying School 2020 are registered. And we can look forward to some great golf given the players in the field.

Notably, among the 42 amateurs, there is David Ravetto from France currently 23rd on the WAGR who raised the Brabazon Trophy in August of this year by winning the English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship.

From Spain, there is Eduard Rousaud ranked 4th on the WAGR who became only the fifth ever Spanish player to play a Major as an amateur when he participated in the US Open in September 2020. Just last week he finished joint fifth at the Andalucía Challenge de España, the only amateur to make the cut at the Challenge Tour event.

The Portuguese amateur, Pedro Lencart E Silva, recently distinguished himself with a win at the Portuguese Federation Cup last month.

Another rising French amateur is Charles Larcelet winner of the 2019 French Men’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship (Murat Cup) who also did himself proud at the 2019 Amundi Open de France by making the cut.

And within the home-grown amateurs, two Italians to watch, Gregorio De Leo and Davide Buchi have already participated in three Alps Tour events this year with their best results at the Cervino Open, 6th and 17th respectively. Plus, of course, Alessandro Radig who was second in the First Stage on the Golf Club Parco de’ Medici course.

Several former, top, amateurs, recently turned pro, join the qualifiers. Matyas Zapletal from the Czech Republic won what is considered the pinnacle of amateur golf competitions in his home country with victory at the Czech International Amateur Championship in August.

Conor Purcell from Ireland, a former Walker Cup player, won the Irish Golfer Shootout this July, staged at the K Club in Ireland, site of the 2006 Ryder Cup.

The Dutch player, Koen Kouwenaar, and the Belgian player, Alan De Bondt both had wins in 2019, one at the Dutch National Open Championship and the other at the King’s Prize.

There are also a number of previous Alps Tour tournament winners lined up. From the 2018 season we have the English player, Marcus MohrOpen St Francois Region Guadeloupe, and from Italy, Michele CeaEin Bay Open. Frenchman, Franck Daux, was a two-time winner in 2016 at the Ein Bay Open and Red Sea Little Venice Open. Whilst, in 2011, the Italian, Cristiano Terragni won the Feudo di Asti Open.

The Final Qualifying Stage is scheduled to be played over 54 holes. The players will play two rounds, one each on the Golf Nazionale and Terre dei Consoli Golf Club courses.

After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the leading 65 players and those players tied on the final qualifying place score, who will then play one further round on the Golf Nazionale golf course.

At the conclusion of the 54 holes, the leading 35 players (and those players tied on the final qualifying place score) will be ranked according to score.  Players holding these positions will be eligible for membership in Category 6 of the Alps Tour for the 2021 season.

Players making the cut of the Final Qualifying Stage and finishing between the 36th and the 65th position will be eligible for membership in Category 8 of the Alps Tour for the 2021 season.

Players between the 66th and the 144th position will be eligible for membership in Category 9 of the Alps Tour for the 2021 season.

Official practice rounds start tomorrow with the weather threatening some heavy showers over the next two days. Hopefully, things should improve on Tuesday with the sun returning and gentle breezes.
